HISTO-CYTOPATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT
The department is professionally equipped and staffed to provide a high quality service to Al Khalidi Medical Center and also to other hospitals’ patients in Jordan.
Second-opinion diagnosis is sought by medical colleagues from other neighboring countries are frequently received as consultation cases.
Pathology staff
Dr. Salah A. Al-Jitawi is a member and fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK) and a member and fellow of the International Academy of Cytology, among other reputed societies. He was trained in King Hussein Medical Center in Jordan, Glasgow University (UK), and in top American medical centers including UCLA, John's Hopkins hospital and Stanford University. He completed FNAB course in Karoliniska Hospital, Stockholm Sweden.
The histopathology facility provides routine diagnostic pathology services in almost all aspects of pathology, including gastrointestinal, male and female genitourinary, skin, upper and lower respiratory systems, neuropathology of brain tumors, hemopoietic system, endocrine pathology and endomyocardial biopsies.
Immuno- and cyto-histochemisty is available upon request from the consultant pathologist.
The frozen section facility is a 7:00am-7:00pm service, and any time by appointment. This service is available to the surgeons at Al Khalidi Medical center and other hospitals in the Amman area.
The exfoliative cytology covers a wide range of exfoliative cells from different sites. It involves pap smears from cervix, urine, nipple discharge, fluid cytology including (ascetic, pleural, pericardial fluid and CSF), in addition to brush cytology from bronchial or common bile duct.
Fine-needle aspiration biopsy has a great role in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules, salivary gland tumors, enlarged lymph nodes, breast lumps, skin tumors, lung, liver and pancreatic masses.
The standards of the techniques in the department are comparable to that in any recognized hospital in the world.
